Inception Movie Review

How do you plant an idea, a seemingly simple idea, into someone without them knowing that the idea came from you? How do you plunge into the subconscious and the unconscious? What can you find when you mess with the dream state? Watch Inception and you’ll find out (at least in the reel world).

It has been a long time since a movie has taken me to a completely new world and introduced me to a new way of thinking. Inception is an experience worth returning to. I watched it 2 times just to make sure I got the details right. This movie provides a glimpse of the depth of man’s unconscious. What truly amazed me is that I can see in full action the workings of man’s defense mechanisms and his ability to change reality aside from the effects of deeply repressed emotions on his conscious actions.

[Spoiler Alert!] This movie shows us the inner worlds of two main characters, Cobb (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and Fisher (played by Cillian Murphy). Cobb is a thief who steals ideas from people’s minds when they are in their dream states. He accepts a final job, out of desperation, to do the opposite–plant an idea. He assembles his team including a forger, an architect and a sidekick. Just like Ocean’s 11, a great heist is not done alone. As Cobb and his team goes deeper and deeper into the heist, Cobb’s unconscious and issues works against him. How they are able to work around Cobb’s issues and achieve the inception is something to be experienced. These cannot be described in words. Both Cobb and Fisher find their catharsis along the way. However, the viewer still has to decide whether this whole movie is just a dream.

Inception is able to present a complex story with a variety of time frames in a convincing and understandable way. There are no unnecessary scenes and the performances were superb. Christopher Nolan, the writer and director, balances exciting live action, intelligent storytelling and good humor which makes for great entertainment value. If you haven’t seen this movie, let me plant an idea onto your conscious brain. WATCH it and REWATCH it!
